Abercrombie & Kent Leads Travel Industry in Support for Earth Hour
March 27, 2010 | 8:30 – 9:30 pm
Earth Hour brings together local communities, corporations and nongovernmental organizations to focus on climate change by inspiring consumers and businesses to turn off their lights for one hour.
In 2007, 2.2 million people took part in the world's first Earth Hour, which started in Sydney, Australia. Last year 4,088 cities in 88 countries "switched off" to show their support — ten times more cities than the previous year — the largest voluntary power down in history.
Earth Hour 2010 aims to involve more than one billion people to demonstrate that we care enough about climate change to take action.
Abercrombie & Kent is working with travel industry partners to support this worldwide effort. Through its 62 offices around the world, Abercrombie & Kent will:
- Encourage government officials to participate by turning off lights from 8:30 to 9:30 p.m.
Last year Egypt received worldwide attention when it turned off the lights at three major landmarks — the Pyramids and Sphinx, Cairo Tower and Bibliotheca Alexandria. - Ask hotel partners to turn off non-essential lighting and substitute candlelight in restaurants.
Thirteen Sanctuary Lodges & Camps in Africa will mark Earth Hour with Bush Dinners under the stars. In the Serengeti at Sanctuary Kusini, guests will enjoy a "cosmic safari" atop a giant kopje boulder with an unobstructed view of the night sky. - Celebrate the "dark skies" with stargazing parties.
The Sun Boats in Egypt and Eclipse in the Galapagos will invite guests to spend the hour on deck to enjoy the night sky.

"A Natural Selection" Cookie Magazine-
One hundred and fifty years after Darwin's On the Origin of Species, an animal-obsessed father and son visit the zoological holy lands of the Galápagos Islands. Written and Photographed by Stephen Lewis.
"...we were whisked into the genteel world of storied outfitter Abercrombie & Kent, starting with a warm welcome from one of its naturalist guides. Danny was thrilled to learn that seven of our 37 fellow travelers were boys, ranging in age from 5 (the minimum) to 11"
"Our guides' encyclopedic knowledge made for fascinating nightly lectures. At our astronomy lesson — held in inky darkness on the upper deck — I thought about how we were seeing the Milky Way just as Darwin had. Danny was riveted by the last lecture, which told us the famed naturalist developed his theories observing the same kinds of creatures we'd seen. For Danny, this was the best classroom on earth."
