Kitirua Plains Lodge, an A&K Sanctuary
Amboseli National Park, Kenya
Kenya’s Amboseli National Park enjoys near mythic status among wildlife lovers, thanks to its position in the shadow of Mount Kilimanjaro, the particular grandeur of its landscape and the vast herds of elephants that inhabit it. Now Amboseli can be experienced through a new luxury safari lodge whose design is at once strikingly innovative and deeply rooted in the elements of its environment. Kitirua Plains Lodge has been carefully constructed in a private concession adjoining the park, using local materials and craftsmanship to create an extraordinary property inspired by Maasai principles of living alongside nature. Sustainability was key in the design of this sublime, solar-powered luxury lodge on the doorstep of Amboseli National Park, where curved towers are plastered the color of the soil and Maasai-style screens in the large suites cleverly allow for passive ventilation. A wellness area with spa treatment rooms, an outdoor yoga deck and a gym, plus a dreamy pool overlooking the landscape, deliver pampering downtime after game drives with the brilliant guides. Guests also get to see the work of A&K Philanthropy during community visits.

THE LODGE
A newly built lodge with a Mount Kilimanjaro backdrop
Architecturally striking, eco-friendly bolthole in tune with the landscape
As semi-nomadic stewards of the land, the Maasai have long understood how to exist alongside nature without disrupting it, a philosophy deeply embedded in the design of Kitirua Plains Lodge. Newly built in 2025-26, this luxury lodge on the edge of Amboseli National Park is not only the latest addition to the A&K Sanctuary portfolio but also one of the most architecturally arresting – conceived not to mimic its environment but to meld unobtrusively with it. Curved walls and fluid rooflines echo the undulating terrain and the exterior plaster is blended with soil from the site to create harmony in texture and color (the elevated private dining area atop the viewing tower, accessed by a sculptural spiral staircase, is a design highlight). Even the pool, flanked by an earth-toned terrace of day beds and shaded cabanas, sits neatly within a patch of existing wetland; and spectacular views are the reward during workouts in the wellness area.
This seamless approach continues inside, where distinct design features include hand-woven sisal grass ceilings and striking hand-rolled clay bead pendants. Local sourcing was paramount: 90 per cent of the furniture was made in Kenya from materials such as mango wood and African teak, and Mazeras stone, quarried nearby, forms the cool floor under your feat – its ash-grey hue tying in neatly with the color of the dust kicked up by the herds of game grazing on the plains. Sustainability was also a core guiding principle – not just an after-thought – when building this low-impact luxury lodge, which is entirely solar powered. Passive design strategies minimize the use of air-conditioning and water is supplied from an on-site borehole.
A stay here is an immersive experience where you are truly connected to the awe-inspiring nature all around – scan the field guides and maps in the Explorer’s Lounge to learn more about the setting. And though you can marvel at the imperious Mount Kilimanjaro from your bed (or from your bath, for that matter), you will get even closer on daily game drives where it serves as the impossibly photogenic backdrop for herds of strolling elephants and other local wildlife. Make some time for a spectacular hot-air balloon ride and you can get closer still – your lodge all but disappearing into the plains below as you ascend.
WILDLIFE & SURROUNDINGS
Explore the wildlife-rich habitats of Amboseli National Park
Breathtaking Kenya-Tanzania borderlands
Kilimanjaro views are a constant at this extraordinary new safari lodge in Kenya’s Amboseli National Park – whether that’s crisp panoramas of its snow-ringed summit when the clouds part in the early morning and late afternoon, or as a looming presence in the haze of the midday heat. The name Amboseli is a corruption of empusel, which means “salty dusty place” in Maa, the language of the Maasai, who call this area home. “Salty and dusty” may not sound immediately appetizing – but nor would a margarita if you were to describe it as “salty and sour”. In fact, the landscape here, a UNESCO World Heritage site at the Kenya-Tanzania border, is one of intoxicating beauty and real enchantment – a deliciously balanced cocktail of wildlife-rich habitats, from deep-green marshes in the heart of the park to clusters of acacia forest in the east and great expanses of undulating savannah stretching all the way to the distant horizon. In the rainy season Lake Amboseli (the mostly dried-up bed after which the park was named) fills with shallow water, creating a magical mirage of savannah and sky. The park’s diverse landscape also provides a network of migratory corridors for many species of wildlife – big and small – to move to grazing areas. Combine all this with Africa’s tallest peak as a backdrop, and it's hard not to be awed.
Iconic mountain aside, the Amboseli ecosystem is unique because it’s one of the few places on earth where humans, livestock and wildlife have co-existed for centuries. The Maasai people and the grazing herds they care for are an integral part of the landscape. Guests at Kitirua Plains Lodge can get a sense of the Maasai’s traditional pastoral way of life and rich cultural heritage on visits to the local community. The lodge itself is set on a 128-acre private concession of sweeping savannahs and wetlands on the edge of Amboseli National Park. Two hills on the site create a natural viewing corridor over the plains (a true wow moment when you first arrive). The newly built lodge has a light footprint, with buildings cleverly dispersed across the site to ensure the surrounding ecosystem remains undisturbed.
