Chobe National Park, Botswana

A sublimely spoiling luxury lodge on the edge of Chobe National Park, Chobe Chilwero Lodge is set in an enviable, elevated position overlooking its namesake Chobe River. The national park is a hotspot of biodiversity and natural beauty that is remarkable even by Botswana’s sky-high standards, and is home to the world's largest remaining population of African elephants. Right on its doorstep, this standout Chobe River luxury lodge – its full-service spa is one of the best on the Botswana safari circuit – has unparalleled panoramic views over well-tended gardens to the islands and floodplains beyond, stretching as far as Namibia. It’s also a gateway to the thrilling sights of Victoria Falls, whose thundering beauty is just 90 minutes away. Water-based activities are a big draw here, with gentle cruises on the river to spot wallowing wildlife; and the leafy fenced grounds of the lodge make it a dream set-up for families and safari first-timers. While many safari camps in Botswana offer off-grid stays under canvas for those looking to go truly wild, Chobe Chilwero Lodge has supremely comfortable bricks-and-mortar garden suites and a split-level swimming pool, plus a tucked-away suite with its own plunge pool that’s a hit with honeymooners.

THE SAFARI EXPERIENCE

The Safari Experience at Chobe Chilwero Lodge

Birdsong from the surrounding trees is the natural alarm clock at Chobe Chilwero Lodge – a little oasis set in Kasane Forest Reserve, where the joyous choir that welcomes guests sets the tone for an uplifting stay. On your first full day, make your way from your suite in the leafy grounds to breakfast, before setting off on a game drive in Chobe National Park, where elephant and impala may be the first sightings of the day, and prime predator action (lions, leopards, hyenas) can also be expected. What sets this luxury lodge on the edge of Chobe National Park apart is that it also offers unforgettable boat rides along the Chobe River – spot grunting hippos and herds of bellowing buffaloes crossing to Sedudu island (on the border between Botswana and Namibia), as well as lone Nile crocodiles watching motionless from the bank. A fun fact about the river is that it flows both ways, depending on the seasonal water levels spilling over Victoria Falls, whose mighty splendour can be witnessed on an easy day trip from the lodge. While game drives in the park don’t disappoint when it comes to the incredible diversity of wildlife, the thrill of being on the water as the animals splash about nearby is unparalleled – an upclose-and-personal highlight of a visit to this luxury lodge within striking distance of Botswana’s Chobe River. Lunch can be set up on the double-decker boat, eaten as a picnic in the national park or enjoyed back at the lodge, where traditional dishes might include hearty potato soup. Afterwards guests love cooling off in the shaded split-level pool, with honeymooners slinking off for a couple’s spa treatment and children squealing with delight over safari hunts and games of croquet on the lawn. Sundowners are back on the boat, where drinks and snacks are set up on the lower deck, before lantern-lit dinners at the lodge (perhaps barbecue or wood-fired pizza – the chefs are happy to let children add their own toppings; or even grill mopane worms for anyone keen to try authentic local cuisine). Nightcaps can be enjoyed in the bar, followed by fireside tales with the fascinating guides and stargazing in the clear African skies; and on some nights there are traditional dance performances to round off epic days in this extraordinary corner of Botswana.

Fun for the whole family

Unusually for a safari, children are free to roam the grounds and the staff are super kid-friendly – from playing hacky sacks on the lawn to making mini pizzas

Wildlife-spotting boat rides

See elephants swimming and hippos crossing on gentle cruises that also reveal the nests of pied kingfishers dug out of the riverbank

Wellness with a difference

With a split-level swimming pool, kitted out gym, hydrotherapy bath for couples and treetop spa room, the lodge is a standout for health and wellbeing

Country club vibe on safari

This is the perfect lodge for first-timers to the bush, with all the creatures comforts you could want set in lush fenced grounds

THE LODGE

A luxury lodge on the edge of Botswana's Chobe National Park

Elevated escape in a biodiverse paradise

Chobe Chilwero Lodge is not your average Botswana safari set-up. As luxury lodges beside Chobe National Park go, it’s a leader of the pack. Set in a spectacular spot in Kasane Forest Reserve, it grants guests a unique vantage point over the park and its wild inhabitants as they gather at the dazzling, deep-blue waters of the Chobe River, flanked by jackalberry and sausage trees. The national park is a vast, biologically diverse conservation area that’s home to lions, leopards, hippos, crocodiles, giraffes, buffaloes and a 50,000-strong elephant population. And while these thriving animals are what guests at Chobe Chilwero Lodge come to see, it’s comforts for creatures of another sort that make a stay here so memorable.

The elegantly designed lodge is made up of two main buildings encompassing the Bush Boutique (selling jewelry, art and safari-chic clothing) and reception area, as well as the lounge, library, restaurant and bar overlooking the gardens and boma, each linked to outdoor viewing terraces. Paved footpaths crisscross the shaded grounds where there are 15 foliage-fringed suites – including three two-bedroom family options and a secluded pool suite that’s well suited for honeymooners – scattered across lush green lawns. Perhaps most impressively, it is among the few properties on the Botswana safari circuit with a full-service spa and a split-level swimming pool, making this the ideal destination for guests of all ages who prefer their action and adventure served with a side of rest and relaxation: book in for a couple’s hydrotherapy bath or a massage using organic Healing Earth products in the treetop treatment room, and rest assured that workout routines can be kept up in the kitted out gym. Unusually for a safari lodge, children can run around and play on the grass of the safely fenced grounds, working up an appetite for build-your-own pizzas cooked up by the chefs in the wood-fired oven. Views of the Chobe River accompany every meal – it’s a good idea to bring along the Leica binoculars provided to guests so you can survey the animal drama playing out on the banks below.

WILDLIFE & SURROUNDINGS

See African giants in Chobe National Park

Top spot in the heart of elephant country

Chobe National Park, in the far north of Botswana, is known as the “Land of Giants”, due to its thriving population of Kalahari elephants, the largest of the African elephants. Established in 1968, it was the country’s first national park, and is now the third largest by size and the most biologically diverse. The “Chilwero” in Chobe Chilwero Lodge means “high view”, and the lodge’s elevated position in Kasane Forest Reserve, edging the eastern region of the park, provides mesmerizing views of the sapphire-blue Chobe River and beyond. It is also an exceptional option as a Botswana safari lodge with easy access to Victoria Falls, which is just a 90-minute drive away, while the world’s only quadripoint, where Namibia, Botswana, Zimbabwe and Zambia all meet, can be reached in 25 minutes. This location means action-packed days spent on game drives can be followed by an exhilarating trip to the Smoke that Thunders – the world’s largest falling curtain of water.

The fertile banks of the Chobe River – the lifeblood of this corner of Botswana – are where the greatest numbers of the national park’s animals congregate, so keep binoculars at the ready to spot all the action as you lounge on the lodge’s outdoor viewing terraces, or tuck into excellent food in the dining room. The jetty that’s the launch point for boat excursions on the water, when you might make eye contact with a half-submerged hippo or unblinking crocodile, is just 10 minutes from the lodge. More of Africa’s most iconic animals are present in Chobe National Park too, in the remarkably varied habitat encompassing savannah, broadleaf woodland, cathedral mopane forests, riverbank and floodplain, with biodiversity to match. A safari here feels like a particularly exclusive experience, as the number of visitors to the park is controlled – the only traffic jams are likely to be because of herds of game crossing your path. In dry season, it’s not unusual to see thousand-strong packs of elephants or buffaloes, as well as families of giraffes and sable antelopes, making their way to the river to drink.
