Masked Hero image of Botswana Safari: From Delta To Desert

Although Botswana lies thousands of miles from the ocean, life in this land-locked country is shaped by water, as you will discover on this active journey through some of Southern Africa’s most remarkable landscapes. Forever shapeshifting beneath the sun, the Okavango is Africa’s mercurial wonder, a flooded paradise where rivulets run like cheetahs, oxbow lakes lie still and serene, and islets come and go with the tides. Unlike most deltas, the waters of the Okavango never reach the sea, as if guarded jealously by the land. And what treasures it hoards: from prowling lions and vast herds of wildebeest to hundreds of species of birds, wading and watching from the water’s edge. Explore its patchwork of reserves, crawling with iconic African species, before flying southeast to the Makgadikgadi Salt Pans. In this vast basin, once a mighty lake, thousands of zebras migrate between December and March to feast on surrounding nutrient-rich grassland – a wildlife spectacle to rival those of the Serengeti.

Experience the stark beauty of the Makgadikgadi salt pans, an ancient expanse of baobabs, curious species and cracked earth

Learn how the San people, one of Southern Africa’s oldest surviving cultures, hunt, gather and preserve their traditions

Glide over the Selinda Reserve in a small aircraft, the savannahs unfurling to the horizon in every direction

Glide through rushes and waterlilies on a serene safari in a mokoro, a traditional dug-out canoe, paddled by your experienced guide

One of Africa’s most exclusive safari destinations

suggested

Swoop over the unfenced Selinda Reserve in a private plane and it would be tempting to think that this expanse of grassy wilderness is untouched by humans. Bull elephants munch water lilies in the shallows of the Linyanti, lions lurk in islands of thicket, and when the Selinda Spillway connects with the Okavango Delta during heavier rainy seasons, its banks swell with game. Scattered among its 130,000-hectares are four exceptional safari camps, where a handful of discerning guests recharge with mud-massages and private plunge pools after a day spotting exceptional wildlife – and likely no other humans.

Your A&K Experiences: Clamber aboard a custom-made safari vehicle for a day spent off-roading through Selinda, with a chance of being able to follow a pack of endangered African dogs or lions on a hunt.

The predator capital of the world

suggested

Named after the BaTawana tribal chief and his wife – who campaigned for the area to become a nature reserve in 1962 – this small but mighty reserve is located in the Okavango Delta’s central and eastern regions. Some of Africa’s most endangered species of large mammal can be seen in these savannahs and floodplains: cheetah, leopard, lion and African wild dog, making Moremi a must for those looking for the superstars of safari.

Your A&K Experiences: Heed the call of the wild with morning and evening game drives in a custom-built vehicle accompanied by an experienced A&K guide, before relaxing with a sundowner in the camp’s well-stocked library.

Shimmering salt pans

suggested

In the middle of the blazing red of the Kalahari Desert is an incongruous expanse of what appears to be snow – if it wasn’t for the shimmering heat and baobab trees that force their way through its desiccated surface. Makgadikgadi Pans is the salty ghost of a vast network of lakes that once covered much of Botswana. For half the year you can crunch across it on foot with a Zu/'hoasi guide, marvelling at the eching emptiness and secretive desert creatures that call it home, such as aardwolves and bat-eared foxes. Between November and April it is transformed into an algae-rich soup where thousands of flamingos descend to feed.

Your A&K Experiences: Leave the safari vehicles behind for a thrilling 4WD quad bike adventure through this seemingly deserted wonderland that will reveal Stone Age archaeological sites and communities of Zu/’hoasi Bushmen who have survived against all the odds in this arid landscape for thousands of years.
