Dar es Salaam, Tanzania

1 day

A relaxed, coastal city on the Indian Ocean

suggested

Wander the streets of Dar es Salaam, Tanzania’s largest city and former capital, and you'll quickly notice a rich mix of traditional African, Arabic and Indian influences woven through its modern skyscrapers and lively markets. Despite its rapid growth, the port city maintains a laid-back vibe that echoes its Swahili roots. Take a leisurely stroll along the waterfront, dive into the bustling energy of Kariakoo Market, explore the Old Boma – once a German colonial fort now housing the National Museum – or unwind at Coco Beach to take in the refreshing Indian Ocean breeze.

Africa’s largest national park, largely undiscovered by travellers

suggested

As a relatively new and remote reserve, established as a national park in 2019 and situated some 140 miles southwest of Dar es Salaam, Nyerere’s animals are less accustomed to humans, making for authentic encounters – and putting experienced safari guides to the test. During the dry season, the tributaries and lakes sprouting from the great, crocodile-rich Rufiji River attract all manner of wildlife, offering exceptional predator sightings and dramatic hunts. Rise at dawn for thrilling game drives, where you might spot wild dogs, lions, cheetah and elephant, as well as hundreds of intriguing bird species.

Your A&K Experiences: Embark on a river safari along the Rufiji, silently gliding through the hippo-filled waters to observe elephant, hippo, buffalo and crocodiles as they gather along the riverbanks. At Roho ya Selous, stay in one of just eight tented rooms, dining under the stars embarking on optional angling trips to catch and release tigerfish and catfish.

Remote national park offering unmatched exclusivity

suggested

Rugged escarpments. Majestic, rocky kopjes. Savannahs stretching endlessly to the horizon. Tanzania’s second-largest protected wildlife area is also one of East Africa’s most biodiverse and remote, offering a rare level of exclusivity and solitude. Home to just a few lodges hosting a limited number of intrepid travellers, wildlife spectacles are likely to be experienced by your vehicle alone. Expert guides will lead you on thrilling walking safaris, game drives and night drives, showcasing the park’s sublime ecosystem and soaring topography.

Your A&K Experiences: Join your expert guide for early morning drives or walking safaris across the park’s vast, gilded grasslands. As you wind past towering baobab trees, track eland, antelope, lion, hyena, cheetahs, leopard, baboon and, during their denning season between June and August, elusive wild dog. Your accommodation is the sensational Jabali Ridge, its infinity pool and spa offering serene spots from which to gaze out across the bush.

The stage for the Great Migration

suggested

Two million wildebeest, zebra and gazelle race for their lives across the Serengeti in the annual Great Migration between July and October, dodging crocodiles, hyenas and big cats with big teeth. This is the showstopping event, but by no means the only exciting wildlife spectacle to be found in this fantasia of deep forests, fecund wetlands and endless grasslands. It’s a year-long safari hotspot where lions, cheetahs and spotted hyenas stalk Cape buffalo, waterbuck and giraffe wandering freely across the savannah. A&K’s experts have selected prime tented camp locations for each season, giving you front-row seats to the thrilling show as it unfolds.

Your A&K Experiences: A&K’s mobile safari camp, Sanctuary Kichakani, follows the migration across the Serengeti, giving you front-row seats to the thrilling show as it unfolds, in places other safari goers cannot reach. Embark on morning and afternoon game drives; your expert guide ensures prime game viewing throughout your time in the Serengeti.
