Masked Hero image of The Ultimate Kenya Safari

Picture the quintessential African safari and the mind invariably conjures scenes of Kenya: golden savannahs studded with acacias; elephants descending on watering holes; cheetahs and leopards hunting; the guttural roar of lions at dawn and dusk. Kenya is where our story began. In the 1960s, Nairobi resident and Abercrombie & Kent founder Geoffrey Kent pioneered the world’s first modern luxury safari. Six decades on, Abercrombie & Kent continues to set the gold standard for safaris here. This highly personalized journey takes you to the home of the safari and combines two of Kenya’s most celebrated game-viewing spots with another in the south considered a hidden gem.

Nairobi, Kenya

1 day

Urban wildlife and a thriving arts scene in the “green city in the sun”

suggested

Few cities can claim to be home to endangered black rhinos, lions, giraffes and zebras, but Nairobi National Park is just half an hour from the center of this fun, fast-growing capital. Not only can travellers take a safari with a backdrop of skyscrapers and find the history of these creatures in Nairobi National Museum, but there’s also a thriving community of artists, musicians, party-starters and trend-setters that populate the independent shops and DJ booths around town.

Your A&K Experiences: Feed endangered Rothschild’s giraffe at the Giraffe Centre, watch orphaned elephants play at the Sheldrick Wildlife Trust and listen to a traditional storyteller weave age-old folk tales at an exclusive A&K experience in Oloolua Forest in Karen.

A quieter, quintessentially Kenyan corner of conservation

suggested

Located in the south-east of the country, Chyulu Hills is a frequently overlooked area of Kenya – most guests flock to the Maasai Mara. But to skip Chyulu is to miss out on horseback treks through plains of tall, green grass, bush dinners around the campfire and flashes of leopard in the dense cloud forest. There may be more wildlife in Mara, but so, too, are there more travellers.

Your A&K Experiences: Track the Big Five, plus cheetah, fringe-eared oryx, gerenuk, giraffe and many other species by vehicle, on horseback or on foot. Night drives are also offered for those interested in spotting elusive nocturnal species such as hyena and aardvark.

Secluded safaris with community spirit

suggested

Since its inception in 1983, Lewa has been a haven for endangered black rhinos, and now counts 248 of the beasts in its bounds, a remarkable increase from the initial 15. A significant proportion of its revenue is also invested into local community projects. Lewa is a private reserve, meaning guests have exclusive access to spotting the rhinos, lions, zebras and elephants that call the conservancy home, and can bed down in elegant lodges with breathtaking views of the powder-pink sunsets that bloom over the plains.

Your A&K Experiences: Discover the conservancy’s remarkable range of wildlife on game drives, night drives and guided bush walks. Additional adventure awaits from horseback safaris, quad-biking, camel-riding and visits to the Ngare Ndare Forest. Trips to meet members of the local Samburu and Maasai tribes can also be arranged.

A national reserve with the highest concentration of game in the world

suggested

Bordering Tanzania in Kenya’s southwest, Masai Mara is named after its ancestral inhabitants and the dotted appearance of its acacia-studded plains. Its golden savannahs, riverine forests, low-lying mountains and sheer cliff are best known for hosting one of the most extraordinary events on the globe: the Great Migration, in which over two million wildebeest and zebra arrive from the southern Serengeti between June and November. Year-round, though, the reserve supports a range of wildlife from hippos, crocs, lions and hyena to elephants and eagles.

Your A&K Experiences: During peak migration season, the Masai Mara is known for having an overabundance of safari vehicles, but staying at the Olare Motorogi Conservancy provides the flexibility to do game drives in both the Mara and on the private 35,000-acre conservancy. Just north of the Masai Mara Game Reserve, it has the lowest vehicle density in the region while also boasting the highest concentration of big cats anywhere in Africa, making for thrilling early-morning, late-afternoon and night game drives. Hot air ballooning, cultural excursions and kids’ explorer activities can also be arranged.
