Miraflores & More: Lima with an A&K Expert

A&K Resident Tour Director® Victor Pulisci shares an infectious love for his hometown and capital of Peru.

By Bob Whiting, A&K Staff Writer | November 17, 2016

Proud to call Lima his home, A&K Resident Tour Director® Victor Pulisci has been escorting groups throughout Peru and beyond since 1992. Victor is passionate about his hometown, and this becomes immediately apparent when he’s sharing the sights of Lima with our guests. Here’s what this resident insider had to say about his favorite city.

Americas South Peru Lima Coast 1

What makes Lima so unique?

This city has so many distinctive traits. The architecture, history and culture are all so compelling. The common thread is diversity. You see Incan, colonial and contemporary international influences everywhere.

Americas South Peru Lima Miraflores 2

What is your favorite neighborhood?

I grew up in Miraflores, and it still holds my heart. It offers the best of Lima: trendy shopping malls (such as Larcomar overlooking the Pacific Ocean), an abundance of parks, all manner of art galleries and the city’s finest restaurants.

Americas South Peru Lima Architecture 3

What sets the local architecture apart?

You see a strong Spanish colonial influence with wooden balconies, iron fences, graceful arches and colorful tile work. Lima’s modern buildings combine iron and glass for a sleeker look, while private homes take design cues from European magazines and an eclectic mix of other influences.

Americas South Peru Lima Art 4

Tell us about the art scene.

Most of Lima’s galleries are located between Miraflores, San Isidro and Barranco. Artists also display their work street side in Kennedy Park and local shopping arcades. Whatever type of art you’re looking for, you’re sure to find it in Lima.

Americas South Peru Lima Restaurant 5

What’s your favorite dining experience in the city?

I love to take my family to a small, family-run Italian place in San Isidro called Vivaldi. While most people are aware of Lima’s Spanish influences, there is a lesser-known Italian presence here too.

Americas South Peru Lima Night Life 6

Where can you find Lima’s best nightlife?

Just south of Miraflores, the penas (pubs) of Barranco are packed with revelers from Thursday to Saturday. Crowds of locals gather here, enjoying food, drinks and live music late into the night.
