Bhutan only opened to travellers 50 years ago and this deeply spiritual, carbon-neutral, nature-first country is a true one-off. Start in Thimphu for a lesson about dzongs (fortresses) and Buddhism before heading west, where the landscape shifts from alpine forests to verdant valleys in Gangtey and Punakha. Walking trails, temples and incredible scenery form the backbone of the journey, which ends in Paro with a hike up to Paro Taktsang Monastery, or Tiger’s Nest. A knowledgeable local guide will accompany you throughout, sharing invaluable insights into Bhutan’s fascinating, community-minded culture.

Watch the March of the Guards at the Tashichho Dzong, which houses the throne of the King

Seek silence in 17th-century Gangtey Monastery, the largest Nyingma monastery in Bhutan which is decorated with wood carvings and statues

Try your hand at archery, a popular pastime and the national game of Bhutan

Spiritual sightseeing in the laidback capital

suggested

Dzong temples decorated with traditional thangka paintings and colorful ritual cakes reminiscent of Catherine Wheels, celestial institutes and the National Chorten Memorial, where residents come for daily worship, spinning prayer wheels and walking meditative loops around the outside, all set the spiritual scene in Bhutan’s easy-to-explore, low-key capital.

Your A&K Experiences: A guided tour takes in a trio of sights: the giant Buddha Dordenma statue and meditation hall which sits on top of a hill overlooking the Thimphu valley; the Traditional Medicine Institute and the Pangrizampa School of Astrology for a personal astrology reading by a monk.

Meditative, heart-soaring hikes and rare birds

suggested

Patchwork fields meet gentle forested slopes in this peaceful central valley, criss-crossed by nature trails and home to the renowned Gangtey Monastery where morning prayers with monks in the Shedra are a special way to start the day. No wonder it’s a haven for the endangered Black Neck Cranes that migrate here each winter from the Tibetan Plateau.

Your A&K Experiences: Hike the Gangtey Nature Trail, the shortest and most beautiful of the walking routes in Bhutan, which weaves through a shady pine forest before emerging out into the open for breathtaking views of the Phobjikha Valley.

A lush valley with an ancient capital

suggested

Known for its quality produce, the low-altitude Punakha Valley is all terraced rice paddies, red chilies and aubergines drying in the sun on corrugated tin roofs. Two rivers, Pho and Mo Chu, converge in the valley, whilst tucked-away temples – such as the infamous Chimi Lhakhang monastery, surrounded by fluttering prayer flags – can only be reached on foot.

Your A&K Experiences: Visit the majestic 17th-century Punakha Dzong ("palace of great happiness”) – the second oldest and second largest in Bhutan – at the confluence of the Mo Chu and Pho Rivers. Back at your hotel, luxuriate in a restorative spa treatment.

The starting point for Tiger’s Nest

suggested

The single-street town lined with shops is the place for picking up the softest yak-wool shawls, Bhutanese whisky, intricate wood carvings and singing bowls to take home, as well as lighting butter lamps at sacred shrines, seeing the collection of relics at the National Museum and resting up ahead of a challenging hike up to Bhutan’s iconic Taktsang Monastery, known as Tiger’s Nest.

Your A&K Experiences: The pinnacle of any trip to Bhutan is an early morning trek up to the Tiger’s Nest Monastery, which clings to the cliff 3,000ft above the valley. A Champagne picnic lunch, with cultural show, is the reward upon your return.
