Nepal’s culture-dense capital

suggested

Film and folk festivals, well-trodden trails and secret scenic routes, a deep-end dive into Nepal’s gods, spirits, prayers and rituals: Kathmandu’s culture is everywhere you look. Temples, monasteries and elaborate courtyards built by Newar artisans have endured; Durbar Square and Teleju Temple give way to a bustling bazaar and the old city’s labyrinthine backstreets. Patan is known as the city of arts and architecture and famous for its fine bronze, silver and copper works and its museum exhibits intricate metalwork sculptures of Hindu and Buddhist deities.

Your A&K Experiences: Visit Swayambhunath Stupa, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It rests on a hillock towards the western edge of Kathmandu and is one of Nepal’s most ancient, important and sacred Buddhist shrines.

The lakeside gateway to Annapurna

suggested

In Pokhara, peaks are piled high with snow that melts into lakes and rivers, making this valley one of the most picturesque natural attractions in the kingdom. With dense forests, gushing rivers and lucid lakes, it’s an exciting starting point for many of Nepal’s most popular trekking and rafting destinations. No visit is complete without a boat trip on Phewa Taal, the second largest lake in Nepal. Visit Barahi Temple – the island temple situated on the lake’s tiny island and surrounded by magnificent views.

Your A&K Experiences: Visit the International Mountain Museum, which documents many of the first Himalayan ascents and displays a range of artifacts used during those early expeditions. It provides fascinating insight into the history of mountains and mountaineering.

A secluded, high-altitude village in Annapurna’s Kali Gandaki valley

suggested

The drive here – through dramatic ravines and deep gorges – is almost as captivating as the village’s rugged landscapes, icy streams and oak forests. Nearby, Marpha’s apple orchards and traditional stone houses are nestled at the southern edge of Nepal’s Mustang region, where you will encounter rural Nepalese life. Stroll through the streets and purchase hand-made craft souvenirs, before heading to a truly authentic chef’s table: lunch is hosted and served by Mrs Kamala, a renowned Thakali chef and civic leader, in her home.

Your A&K Experiences: Drive to Jharkot, a village seemingly untouched by time, then embark on a serene hike into the valley through ancient orchards, crossing suspension bridges and ascending the opposite side to ancient Jhong village. Tour a traditional home and enjoy lunch at the monastery, with a 360-degree view of the surrounding valleys and majestic mountains.

An ancient Newari town offering awe-inspiring Himalayan views

Situated amid hills and valleys and surrounded by greenery, Dhulikhel is one of the ancient Newari towns that have preserved the Newari tradition and culture. The one-hour drive from Kathmandu to Dhulikhel offers the finest views of the northeastern Himalaya along with beautiful pagoda-style temples. Dhulikhel, which has always been an important trade center, is a place of exhilarating beauty and unparalleled serenity. It is famous for its vantage location in viewing the Himalayan ranges from Cho Oyu in the east to Himalchuli in the west.

Your A&K Experiences: Visit the ancient stupa of Namo Buddha, a sanctuary of peace and harmony adorned with fluttering prayer flags. This has become a sacred place to accumulate merit through circumambulation. People from all over the world visit the site to pay homage to the Great Being and make traditional offerings of butter lamps.
