Kathmandu, Nepal

Nepal’s culture-dense capital

suggested

Film and folk festivals, well-trodden trails and secret scenic routes, a deep-end dive into Nepal’s gods, spirits, prayers and rituals: Kathmandu’s culture is everywhere you look. Temples, monasteries and elaborate courtyards built by Newar artisans have endured; Durbar Square and Teleju Temple give way to a bustling bazaar and the old city’s labyrinthine backstreets. Patan is known as the city of arts and architecture and famous for its fine bronze, silver and copper works and its museum exhibits intricate metalwork sculptures of Hindu and Buddhist deities.

Your A&K Experiences: Bouddhanath Stupa, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is one of the most imposing landmarks of Kathmandu. This ancient stupa is built on a massive three level mandala-style platform; its base is adorned with 108 small images of the Dhyani Amitabha Buddha and inset with prayer wheels. Pilgrims circle the stupa in a clockwise direction each day spinning the prayer wheels. At one of the monasteries in Bouddhanath, experience a meditation session guided by a monk or a nun, who will also provide blessed prayer beads. A local artisan will also provide insight into the monastery’s Thangka paintings.

Monjo, Nepal

Mountain air and Sherpa culture

suggested

Monjo is a small village on the path to Everest Base Camp and the gateway to Sagarmatha National Park, a protected area and a UNESCO World Heritage site. Many travelers hike from Lukla to Monjo, where sherpas share stories of treks over hot tea, wooden bridges cross glacier-fed rivers and a sense of anticipation seeps through the village streets. The Dalai Lama called this part of the trail “the steps to heaven”, and the ascent to Namche offers a first glimpse of Everest itself.

Your A&K Experiences: Surrounded by an amphitheater of peaks – Thamserku (21,711 ft), Kwangde Ri (20,297 ft) and Khumbila (17,724 ft) – Namche is the largest and most prosperous town in the Khumbu region. The town is a hub for the area and its buzzy Saturday bazaar sells everything from livestock and vegetables to traditional crafts such as hand-woven aprons and Tibetan boots. After lunch here, continue your trek to Tashinga.

Explore Mong-La and the Gokyo Valley, keeping an eye out for wildlife

suggested

Reaching Tashinga involves crossing the Dudh Koshi (Milk River) from Monjo, entering Sagarmatha National Park and passing through the valley’s riverbed and onto the steep ascent to Namche, with eyes on Namoa, Everest and various peaks. Finally, arrive in Tashinga to breathtaking views of Ama Dablam (21,965 ft), Thamserku, the Taboche Peak and Khumbila.

Your A&K Experiences: Skip the traditional – and occasionally crowded – trail and take an alternative route in the Gokyo Valley’s lower section. The relaxed pace is perfect for acclimatization, whilst the views at Mong-La ridge are reward enough. If you’re lucky, you may spot wildlife such as musk deer and Himalayan vultures.

A Sherpa village beneath the peaks

suggested

Pangboche will be your base after Tashinga: the trek will take around five or six hours and involves a steep descent down to the Dudh Koshi river, crossing a suspension bridge in the lee of a gigantic overhanging cliff, climbing through pine forests to find Tengboche Monastery. The trek ends with a climb to Pangboche, home to Khumbu’s oldest monastery and spectacular views of Ama Dablam.

Your A&K Experiences: Embark on a day hike to Ama Dablam Base Camp. Cross the Imja river on a suspension bridge, follow a gradual ascent to Lhabarma and find yourself standing right in front of the mountain ridge. From here you have an incredible view of an array of peaks including Nuptse (25,791ft) and Thamserku, as well as the beautiful Mimbo glacier.

An ancient Newari town offering awe-inspiring Himalayan views

suggested

Situated amid hills and valleys and surrounded by greenery, Dhulikhel is one of the ancient Newari towns that have preserved the Newari tradition and culture. The hour’s drive from Kathmandu to Dhulikhel offers the finest views of the northeastern Himalaya along with beautiful pagoda-style temples. Dhulikhel, which has always been an important trade center, is a place of exhilarating beauty and unparalleled serenity. It is famous for its vantage location in viewing the Himalayan ranges from Cho Oyu in the east to Himalchuli in the west.

Your A&K Experiences: Hike to an organic farm and explore the terraced fields with the small team of farmers, picking vegetables and herbs for your next meal. Later, at your resort, you will receive a lesson on Nepali cuisine. The chef will demonstrate traditional cooking processes and you will have a chance to learn about and taste local Nepali cuisine.
