A bustling capital with cultural curiosities

suggested

Better known as Tana, Madagascar’s capital city in the Central Highlands is a vibrant mix of colonial houses, steepled hilltop churches and French mansions. In the Analakely market, the scent of Malagasy street food fills the air (grilled meat skewers, samosa-like sambos) while side-alley bakeries sell cassava muffins. There are a handful of museums and palaces, including the Presidential Palace.

Your A&K Experiences: Relax by the rooftop pool and admire the city view from your centrally located hotel, close to the business district and within easy reach of sights including the Queen’s Palace, the Immaculate Conception Cathedral and the Botanical and Zoological Garden of Tsimbazaza .

Otherworldly landscapes and endemic wildlife

suggested

Amazing rock formations and vast rolling plains characterize this natural park in the southwest of the island, a sacred land for the Bara tribe who use caves in the canyon walls as burial sites. Plants such as native spine-bearing palm trees dot the horizon while troops of nimble ring-tailed lemurs dart past in the distance.

Your A&K Experiences: Take a full-day guided walk within the park which can be adapted to suit individual abilities and interests (the Canyon des Singes, for instance, winds through dense forest to a rock pool). Keep your eyes peeled for birds, reptiles and frogs.

A unique biodiverse forest, home to the Antandroy tribe

suggested

Located alongside the Mandrare River, the community-managed Ifotaka spiny forest is an extraordinarily biodiverse habitat, renowned for its lemur populations, rare flora and fauna and birds such as the crested coua. Protecting the forest is the Antandroy tribe who will share stories of their staunch traditions and taboos.

Your A&K Experiences: Learn about the culture and customs of the local Antandroy tribe on a guided walk through the sacred spiny forest to their ancestral tombs.

Walk amongst the lemurs in the rainforest

suggested

An incredible rainforest with two sections: the Analamazoatra Reserve, where the ghostly call of indri lemur echoes through the tree canopy and Mantadia, for spotting black-and-white ruffed lemur and diademed sifaka. Waterfalls, rare ferns and over 1,000 species of orchid are also highlights.

Your A&K Experiences: Hike the trails in the Mantadia National Park to the Rianasoa Waterfall for a picnic lunch, looking out for birds and lemurs along the way.
