Swala Camp
Sometimes less really is more. Fewer people, more animals. No crowds, better experience. So it is at Swala Camp, in Tanzania’s magnificent yet relatively little visited Tarangire National Park. It’s not exactly undiscovered or any kind of secret – the park’s thriving elephant population is world-famous. Nevertheless, a wonderful serenity prevails in and around Swala. The camp’s name alludes to its resident herd of impala, though their presence at the waterhole attracts a lot of other wildlife too – elephants, of course, but also lions and leopards, whose interest in the dainty impala may or may not be entirely benign.

Enhance your stay with these extraordinary experiences
Never a dull moment, either within or beyond the camp. The overall opportunities for wildlife viewing are outstanding; the chance to explore on foot and by night are not to be missed; the prospect of watching the sun rise over the savannah from a hot-air balloon, followed by a champagne-flavoured breakfast picnic… well, what’s not to love?

Game Drives
Wildlife-spotting begins in camp with the ubiquitous elephants, the resident herd of impala and myriad other species that regularly visit the waterhole and wander among the ancient baobabs (or, in the case of leopards, dangle from their branches). Expert-led game drives in the early morning and late afternoon take you deeper into the exceptionally biodiverse habitat of Tarangire National Park.

Bespoke Bush Walks
Nothing quickens the senses quite like a stroll in the African wilderness. Swala is one of the few camps in northern Tanzania where it’s possible to do so; guided walks are therefore not merely possible but strongly recommended.

Hot-Air Ballooning
Some things really are worth getting out of bed for before dawn, even when you’re on vacation. A hot-air balloon flight over the savannah, watching the landscape take shape in the first rays of a new morning’s sunshine, is surely one of them.
