Kichakani Camp
It’s not just the wildebeest. We, too, are creatures of habit. Most of us tend to think of the Great Migration in terms of a single dramatic moment: the moment when a million or so innocent ungulates attempt to cross the Mara River and avoid being devoured by the lions, crocodiles and other photogenic predators that are hanging around licking their chops. But the Great Migration – as its name suggests – is a process, not a moment, one that continues in a year-round cycle. Kichakani Mobile Camp, which exists in two locations in different parts of the Serengeti National Park, allows guests to see two quite distinct moments in this cycle – the Mara River crossing being one of them, the no less extraordinary wildebeest calving season the other. All this from a tented camp cut on classic lines, redolent of the Golden Age of safari – though with a good many more up-to-date flourishes.

Game Drives
Expert-led game drives in the early morning and late afternoon allow you to see the Serengeti at its breathtaking best. (Full-day game drives are also possible.) Understandably, the Great Migration is a subject of endless fascination, and the prospect of seeing a million or more animals simultaneously on the move – and taking their chances with the most charismatic predators on earth – is likely to be a priority for many guests. But the Serengeti is a thrillingly biodiverse habitat, and many of its most compelling dramas play out on a smaller, less operatic scale.

Sundowners
A glass or two of something chilled and interesting as the sun sets on another day of wonders on the African savannah. The light fades, the temperature drops, the nocturnal orchestra tunes up. Simple as it may sound – and it certainly doesn’t have to be complicated – there’s no denying the significance of the sundowner as an essential component of the safari experience.
